🥇 Pinterest leads the pack on AI

📰 News! Getcha Marketing News, Here...

A social media platform taking a stand against AI?!? I see you Pinterest...

Last week, I was scrolling Pinterest and saw this gorgeous office space. Right as I was about to pin it to my home makeover board, I saw a little marker in the bottom left corner: "AI Modified".

The space looks like it could be a real space in someone's home. After I saw the AI modified sticker, I realized I couldn't see the string or anything holding up the plant holder in the top right by the window... Other than that, this is a pretty great execution on AI's part.

With Meta going all in on AI, it's inevitable: If you're in the social media space, you'll be expected to know a lot about and know how to use (and detect) AI. It's getting harder by the day to detect AI.

This is a step in the right direction for social platforms with AI transparency.

Here's a word from the Pinterest press release from the launch in April.

"...we not only analyze an image’s metadata, but also developed classifiers that automatically detect Gen AI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers.
Pinterest believes that Gen AI, when thoughtfully implemented, can be inspirational and actionable—enhancing people's ability to create a life they love. Over the coming months, we look forward to introducing more tools to build upon our ongoing AI work."

While Pinterest isn't anti-AI, it's clear they want to draw some guardrails for the people who just want to escape from the "AI slop" they're seeing everywhere else.

Why it matters: Ethical AI Use

If you’ve been here for a bit, you know I’m pro-AI. I'm also pro-AI Transparency.

We need to stay up-to-date on these tools so we can use them for good and recognize when they’re being misused.

Here's the kicker:

No one’s handing out rulebooks for ethical AI use.

There's no Higher Agency for AI Transparency (that I know of).

It's on us to draw the outline what is human creativity and what is machine assistance.

The world changed when the world went online.

And it's happening again:

  • LinkedIn is drowning in low-quality "thought leadership" that says nothing
  • Image generation tools improve faster than we can detect deepfakes (MidJourney, DALLE, etc.)
  • Consumers have a high BS-detector and are skeptical of brands using AI without disclosing it

There aren't two sides to this argument.

You can leverage AI generation while upholding your clarity, context, and consent (this is an entirely different conversation I should get into at another time).

Consumers have the right to know:

  • What they’re consuming
  • Where it's coming from
  • Why the creators make the decisions they do

This is true for more than just marketing...

Shout out to Pinterest for being the change we all want to see in the AI space.

Have a great weekend, friends.
